Understanding speed in the game

Being fast isn’t just about clicking quickly when you control many units.
It’s mostly about doing many things at once and seeing what’s happening so you can react faster.

The secret: keep a steady rhythm

This rhythm should become a habit from the start of the game, in the Dark Age.
That’s when you can get used to playing fast!
The Dark Age has many repeated actions, so it needs a bit less focus than later stages.
We’ll use this phase as training.

Know that your first games using this method will be hard, you will lose sometimes, and that’s okay. You just need to get used to the new rhythm.

Practice

In every game, try to quickly switch between your scout’s view and your town center view using keyboard shortcuts.
Do it often, not too fast, but keep a steady pace without staying too long on one thing.

You’ll repeat this move hundreds of times in each Dark Age, and I promise it will soon feel natural.

This is called muscle memory, and it’s what will help you be much more comfortable and faster when you need to handle many things at once.

Test yourself!

Here’s an exercise to measure yourself:
Start a solo game and pick a Mesoamerican civilization.
Send your scout to attack a boar right away.
Hit it twice then pull back, while gathering your sheep on the way.
Use relics as waypoints, making sure you don’t lose your scout or the boar.

While doing all this, do your build order calmly at home base.
